I think the key is THINKING about little things and planning ahead of time. Children really do appreciate little sweet things that you will do, and they will remember those things forever. My children are 12 (boy) and 10 (girl) and every now and then they will remember little things - that seemed so very minor at the time - but that obviously meant a great deal to them. When my daughter was 3, she was in the hospital with pneumonia for a week. One late evening, I went and got some doughnuts from the vending machine and we sat in the hospital bed together and ate them while we watched TV. She brings up that memory quite often.
